My computer crashed. The computer with my dissertation work and all my
photos. While I had backed up a fair amount of the data, I didn't back it
ALL up - especially the itunes collection.
The good News, I easily was able to transfer about 97% of the most important
stuff. The Bad? My itunes library is pretty much gone. It was a hal.dll error
which was random and completely unexpected. I run a virus scan daily and am
very, very careful with my machines. Lesson Learned!

Shit. My condolences. I've had this happen to me before, too, and the most important thing I lost at that point was a running letter I'd been writing to my daughter since before she was born, adding to it as she grew...She was 4 when I lost it all. Painful way to learn the backup lesson.
Good luck re-creating, sister.
Suck!
There are some great services online that will auto backup for not that much money. If something happens to your computer - you just go online and get your files. Even your ITunes library.
I know this from experience...lol
Ouch!!!
Maybe your misfortune will serve as a lesson to those of *us* who don't have ANYTHING backed up (cough cough). Not that it's any consolation to you. I'm very sorry and hope you can find someway to retrieve it. Maybe check with the iTunes store if you bought anything through them - sometimes they'll restore it for you, I think.
I have been through this scenario...the Geek Squad calls it the "blue screen of death". Never was able to get that laptop back in shape again even with the restore package from Dell.
