Yesterday, after school, we stopped at the music shop to rent a violin for
Lilith since she decided she wanted to be in orchestra this year. It was a
surprise for her as I did not know you could rent one instead of buying it
outright! I made her a promise that if she sticks with it long enough, I
will take the money that has gone towards the rental fees and apply it to a brad new instrument for her. ^_^

So funny! My first picture was of Jacelyns violin, she is also joining orchestra this year. My child is apparently a monster as she needed the adult size so to rent we pay 15 bucks a month, not bad at all. After two years the store we are renting from takes the total amount we have paid over two years and applies it to a brand new one, assuming of course she chooses to stick with it.
Is your daughter in 6th grade?
Very cool! My son's starting 4th grade & started violin through the school district over the summer. We could have a string ensemble by the time this year is over :-)
We were surprised by the rent-to-own price (especially when we added the insurance costs in, too). I asked the teacher re: buying a used violin on e-bay & she offered me a school violin for my son to use, instead. I keep telling her that, if a needy child comes along who absolutely can't afford to play without a school loaner, to please let me know. We could figure out how to afford it, we just don't *want to* pay out if we don't have to...
I hope she loves it. My son (1oth grade) plays bassoon. Not an easy instrument to master. He started in 6th grade. Music is SUCH a wonderful medium. And it is proven that those that play a musical instrument do better in math and science. If she decides the violin is not for her...encourage her to try something else. Music will likely provide a college scholarship for my son. (fingers crossed!)
Well, this is a used one, and rental fees are $20 per month. I figure after 2 years that should be enough to apply all the rental fees to the purchase of a brand new one. My boyfriend's ex plays the cello and was telling me to wait until she is fully grown to actually buy one so that she will not outgrow it!
