These are grackles. Hundreds of them. They are a nuisance here in the Austin area ~ I guess actually across a big part of the state. They are loud, messy, and apparently don't have enough natural predatators. Yuck.
when i hear them, i always think of high school. they always congregated in the trees outside the girls dorm and we could hear them all hours of the day and night.
i cannot stand grackles. they are always on the busiest street corners -- everywhere. my girlfriend's daughter calls them WalMart birds, because they're ALWAYS in WalMart parking lots!
They also seem to be not so very smart. I used to watch them outside my office window. . . they appeared to be walking about hoping to randomly stumble into food instead of actually seeking it. The MUST be sorta smart, though, as they can survive almost anywhere!
