Who thought that THIS was a necessary publication? Leaving completely aside
that I'm a pagan, leaving also aside that I'm an ordained minister, it seems
like if you're religious enough to pray you don't need a Guide For Dummies
to do it. Shouldn't prayer (or ritual, or meditation, or whatever) be a
personal thing between you and your God?

Very interesting. At our church last week the sermon revolved around the
"christian inspiration" industry.
I agree it is a personal thing. But sometimes, just me personally, I like to read what/how others pray or meditate. Maybe sometimes I may be lacking in inspiration or even to a point where I can't even pray and these type of books come in handy. Sometimes they are even a reminder for me to pray. You just never know where one might find inspiration...could be a whole book...could be just a line or a word. Anyways...just a thought. Just because someone is religious, doesn't mean they have all the answers. God knows I look for answers everywhere. It's really kinda nice knowing I've got lots of options to find those answers! Please don't think I am being mean or anything like that...I am not trying to be. Just hoping my humble opinion might help shed some light.
It does help. I've always, personally, found inspiration in the little things in life. It could be anything, even a particularly pretty batch of lint from my dryer. It reminds me to stop and be grateful I got to see it.
I suppose I'm just touchy about being told 'how' to believe because I grew up in a church that dictates your life right down to your underwear. There was a right way and a wrong way and you did it the right way or else. It caused me to believe in nothing, to find beauty nowhere for a long time. So the thought that a prayer might have to be scripted for it to be 'right' gets my hackles up.
